Air quality in Delhi, Noida and Gurugram still 'very poor', likely to peak in November

The overall air quality in the national capital continued to remain 'very poor' with smog engulfing the Delhi-NCR region, as per SAFAR-India.

Delhi's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 322 on Monday morning around 10am, same as the level registered on Sunday morning, according to latest data released by SAFAR-India. The national capital, which saw a 'very poor' AQI on October 22 had improved its AQI to a 'moderate' 190 on October 25, started see a decline in air quality during the weekend.

An AQI up to 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe".

On Monday, Dhirpur recorded a 'very poor' AQI of 384 (up from 356 on Sunday) while the air quality around Delhi University was registered at 354, the same level measured the previous day, according to date released by System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR).

Other areas in Delhi to record 'very poor' AQI are IGI Airport Terminal 3 (342), IIT Delhi (314), Mathura Road (334) and Aya Nagar (322). Lodhi Road also breached 'very poor' category on Monday by registering an AQI of 311, according to SAFAR-India.

On Monday, Noida and Gurugram also saw 'very poor' AQI levels of 324 and 314 respectively, as per SAFAR data.

The air pollution in Delhi-NCR region is expected to peak between November 1 and 15 with stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana likely to increase during the two weeks, according to a Delhi Pollution Control Committee analysis.

Centre's Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has issued direction that from November 1, only electric, CNG and BS VI-compliant diesel buses will be allowed to operate between Delhi and the NCR areas of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
