The Mumbai Police is said to have made a breakthrough in the case the Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) receiving multiple threatening e-mails. The messages demanded huge sums of money to leave RIL chairman Mukesh Ambani unhurt.

Here is what the police revealed about the case following the arrest of two accused who allegedly sent the e-mails.

  • The case: Threatening emails were sent to the official e-mail ID of Ambani's RIL, demanding money to leave the chairman unharmed. The mail claimed to deploy the "best shooters in India" to target Mukesh Ambani if their demands were not met. At least three e-mails of such character were sent in a span of eight days.
  • The demand: According to news agency PTI, one of the initial emails sent on October 27, Friday, claimed Rs 20 crore in return for leaving the business tycoon unharmed. However, the emails that followed asked for Rs 200 crore before eventually doubling it on Monday.  “If the demands are not fulfilled, a death warrant will be issued,” the police reportedly elaborated the email as saying.
  • The arrests: Two youths -- hailing from Gujarat and Telangana -- were arrested in connection with the case on Saturday. While 19-year-old Ganesh Ramesh Vanrapathi was picked up from Telangana's Warangal, Shadab Khan, 21, was picked up from Gujarat, officials said. Shadab was reportedly described by the cops as a "highly qualified student".
  • What's next? The two youths were arrested under Sections 387 (putting a person in fear of death or of grievous hurt in order to commit extortion) and 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Ganesh Ramesh Vanrapathi was produced before a court here which remanded him to police custody till November 8.
