Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Iran President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi on Monday over the "difficult situation" in the West Asia region and the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
Modi expressed deep concern at the terrorist incidents, violence and loss of civilian lives while reiterating India’s longstanding and consistent position on the Israel-Palestine issue, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement.
“Both the leaders emphasised on the need for preventing escalation, ensuring continued humanitarian aid and early restoration of peace and stability,” the PMO said.
Modi and Raisi reviewed and “positively assessed” the progress in multifaceted bilateral cooperation between India and Iran. They also welcomed the focus and priority given to Chabahar port in Iran for improving regional connectivity.
Both the leaders also agreed to remain in touch given shared interest in regional peace, security and stability.
"Good exchange of perspectives with President @raisi_com of Iran on the difficult situation in West Asia and the Israel-Hamas conflict. Terrorist incidents, violence and loss of civilian lives are serious concerns.
"Preventing escalation, ensuring continued humanitarian aid and early restoration of peace and stability are important. Welcomed the progress in our bilateral cooperation, including on the Chabahar port," Modi said on X.
Modi had earlier spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Jordan's King Abdullah II and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi since the Israel-Hamas war began.
