An alleged case of honour killing shocked Kerala after a 43-year-old man was arrested for the murder of his minor daughter in Karumalloor of Ernakulam district's Aluva. The accused, according to the police, tortured and force-fed his 14-year-old daughter pesticide over her bonding with a boy from another faith. The girl remained hospitalised for 10 days before losing the battle for life on Tuesday. Here is what we know so far about the case that has caused an uproar in Kerala.
1. According to the police, the accused Abees was furious when he learnt that his minor daughter Fathima was in love with a friend who belonged to another faith. Abees confiscated his daughter's phone but Fathima stayed in touch with her friend through another mobile. This reportedly led to the assault that claimed her life.
2. On the morning of October 29, Sunday, Abees assaulted his daughter using an iron rod. After the brutal thrashing, he forcefully poured pesticide into Fathima's mouth. Although she tried to spit out the poisonous substance, she soon started vomiting and fainted. It was then she was rushed to the hospital by her mother and other relatives where the doctors diagnosed that the girl's internal organs were affected by the pesticide.
3. Abees was arrested after the police were notified of the incident by the doctors at the hospital. Fathima remained admitted at the intensive care (ICU) for ten days before she succumbed on November 7, Tuesday.
4. A case was registered against Abees, an engineer at a private firm, on November 1, Manoramaonline said in a report. A Magistrate who visited Fathima at the hospital had recorded her statement, the news report added.
5. The incident was the fifth honour killing that Kerala witnessed in the last six years, the Manoramaonline report said.
