The Trinamool Congress party has entrusted its MP Mahua Moitra with a new party role, amidst a probe by the Parliament Committee in the cash-for-query case.

Moitra has been appointed as the party’s district chief of Krishnanagar (Nadia North) district. Moitra took to Twitter and thanked party leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the appointment. “Thank you @MamataOfficial and @AITCofficial for appointing me District President of Krishnanagar (Nadia North). Will always work with the party for the people of Krishnanagar,” Moitra tweeted. The district falls within Moitra’s parliament constituency.

Moitra’s comments come at a time when the party was seen lacking in defending its MP in the cash-for-query probe by Parliament ethics committee. According to reports, ethics committee Chairman Vinod Kumar Sonkar submitted the report of the panel on the cash-for-query allegation against Moitra to the office of Speaker Om Birla recently. The panel has reportedly recommended “explusion” of the MP from the House for accepting "illegal gratifications" from businessman Darshan Hiranandani to raise questions in Parliament at his behest.

The committee reportedly recommended Moitra's expulsion from the Lok Sabha for "unethical conduct" and "contempt of the House”. According to reports, six of the 10-member committee voted in support of the 479-page report while four opposition members disapproved the move.
