A group of 'Nihangs' on Wednesday night shot dead a police constable and injured at least two others in Punjab's Kapurthala district, reports said citing officials. At least 10 were arrested as of Thursday morning.
The policemen were trying to arrest some Nihangs, an order of Sikhs clad in blue and armed with traditional weapons, in Sultanpur Lodhi based on a case registered against them, PTI quoted a senior police official as saying.
The shootout reportedly happened amid an dispute between two Nihang groups over the ownership of Gurudwara Shri Akal Bunga.
The police personnel were standing on the road when the Nihangs opened fire at them, Kapurthala Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Tejbir Singh Hundal told the agency.
More policemen have been deployed at the spot and senior officials have rushed to the area, said officials.
