Former JDS Karnataka state president C.M. Ibrahim and JDS national vice-president C.K. Nanu were expelled from the party citing "anti-party activities".
JDS supremo H.D. Devegowda, who is the national president of the Janata Dal Secular party, announced that the national executive meeting held in Bengaluru's JP Bhavan on Saturday had unanimously passed two resolutions to oust the two leaders.
While, Mandya district JDS chief D. Ramesh proposed a resolution for the expulsion of Ibrahim, West Bengal JDS chief Punit Kumar Singh moved a resolution to expel Nanu of Kerala from the party, during the meeting attended by all state presidents and executive members.
It may be recalled that Ibrahim who had quit the Congress to join JDS in March 2022, was made the party chief. He was replaced by former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy after he opposed Devegowda's decision to form an alliance with the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Devegowda had defended his party’s decision to form the alliance with BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls saying JDS was not an “opportunistic” party as being alleged by the Congress party. “This is the pain and desperation to save a regional party for which I toiled hard for 40 years ever since Morarji (Desai) gave me the reins of the party. It is not greed. I have taken the decision (on alliance) to save the party," Devegowda had said.
In October, Devegowda removed Ibrahim from the post of state president by dissolving the state working committee and appointed his son and JDLP leader H.D. Kumaraswamy, as the ad-hoc president.
The dissolution of the state unit had followed Ibrahim's open revolt against the party for choosing to support the NDA ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Ibrahim, who opposed the JDS-BJP alliance, also claimed that JDS did not belong to one family and he was heading the "original JDS".
Meanwhile, the Nanu faction of the party in Kerala which is also opposed to the party aligning with the NDA has convened a meeting in Bengaluru on December 11 demanding Devegowda to revoke the party's decision to support the BJP (NDA) and instead support INDIA- the anti-BJP alliance of the opposition parties.
