Members of the Opposition staged a protest march at Jantar Mantar on Thursday condemning the mass suspension from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha during the week. Over 140 members have been suspended from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

The protesters condemned the Prime Minister and Home Minister for not making statements regarding the Parliament security breach within the Houses while giving interviews to the media.

The Opposition members conducted the protest march from the old Parliament building to Vijay Chowk in central Delhi carrying a large banner with the caption “Save Democracy". The protesting members also had placards with message "Parliament Caged, Democracy Expelled!"

Condemning the suspension, Congress President and Opposition leader in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge charged ruling party MPs were disrupting House proceedings purposefully. Kharge condemned the absence of the Prime Minister and Home Minister from the Houses. “We are repeatedly requesting Lok Sabha Speaker, Rajya Sabha Chairman to allow us to speak on security breach but ruling party MPs disrupting proceedings,” Kharge said. “PM Modi, Home Minister should have spoken in House on security breach; PM spoke elsewhere but did not turn up in Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha,” Kharge added. The Congress leader said the Opposition wanted to raise the Parliament security breach issue in the House, why it happened and who is responsible.

Kharge said leaders of the INDIA bloc will protest at Jantar Mantar on Friday and nationwide protests will be held.

As many as 143 MPs have been suspended since last week for disrupting the proceedings of both the Houses. The lawmakers have been demanding a discussion on the December 13 Parliament security breach and a statement by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue.
