Pro-Kannada outfits in Bengaluru vandalised English signages at shops and business establishments in the city on Wednesday days after a new order issued by the civic authority.

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has passed an order directing businesses to keep at least 60 per cent of their signage in Kannada before February 28 deadline. Failure to comply could lead to suspension of business licences, as per the order.

This comes after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urged residents of the state to learn Kannada. “We have thought about those who are born and raised in Karnataka, those who have built their lives in the state as Kannadigas. In Karnataka, Kannada language gets the priority and it is the duty of everyone to follow the rules. It has been mandated that the commercial establishments must have 60 per cent of signage in Kannada. It has to be implemented before February 28. Let’s follow the rule and be proud Kannadigas,” he had posted on X.
