A police commando was killed in a gunfight that erupted in Manipur on Wednesday morning as security personnel clashed with suspected Kuki militants in Tengnoupal district's Moreh town.

The suspected militants reportedly hurled bombs and fired at a security post with police firing back in retaliation.

The deceased Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel was identified as W. Somorjit who hails from Malom in Imphal. Another officer was injured and a vehicle used by the security forces was also attacked.

Two days ago, two suspects -- Phillip Khongsai and Hemokholal Mate -- who allegedly killed SDPO Ch Anand in October last year was arrested in the town.

Following the incident, the Manipur government has urged the Centre to provide helicopters to be used during medical emergencies in Moreh in the backdrop of law and order situations.
