Assam Police has filed a case against former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders for indulging in “wanton acts of violence”, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday.

Sarma had earlier instructed the Director General of Police G.P. Singh to register a case against Gandhi for provoking the crowd to break barricades as his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra entered state capital Guwahati.

“With reference to wanton acts of violence, provocation, damage to public property and assault on police personnel today by Cong members, an FIR has been registered against Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal , Kanhaiya Kumar and other individuals under section 120(B)143/147/188/283/353/332/333/427 IPC R/W Sec. 3 of PDPP Act,” the chief minister posted on X.

The barricades were erected along a highway in Guwahati to prevent Congress leaders and supporters taking part in the Yatra from entering the main thoroughfares of the city.

The party workers clashed with police as they tried to remove the barricades leading to injuries suffered by state Congress president Bhupen Borah.

Mocking the chief minister’s direction to file case against him, Gandhi had said he doesn't get "intimidated" by such tactics.

The Congress leader further said Sarma's direction was because "he is scared" and asserted that his actions were only helping the yatra in getting publicity.

"We have broken barricades, but will not break the law,” said Gandhi.
