A 45-year-old woman was killed and 17 other people were injured after a platform, made of wood and iron frame, collapsed at a Mata Jagran in Kalkaji Mandir, Delhi, in the wee hours of Sunday, said a report.

According to police, around 1,600 people gathered at the event. Police said sufficient staff was deployed to maintain law and order in the area.

"We got a call at around 12.30 am that a stage, which was set up for 'jagran' purpose, at Kalkaji temple, collapsed. Teams were rushed to the spot. One woman was declared dead. Further investigation is underway," a senior police officer told PTI.

A few of the injured suffered fractures while the condition of the others is stable.

Delhi Police said they have registered a case against the organisers who failed to get permission to conduct the event in Mahant Parisar, Kalkaji Mandir.

They were charged with IPC sections 337 (causing hurt to any person by doing any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life, or the personal safety of others), 304A (causing the death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide) amd 188 (disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant).

Kalkaji Temple Priest, Sunil Sunny told ANI, "Yesterday was the 23rd annual 'Jagran' at Kalkaji temple. Prominent singers and a large number of devotees had arrived... When B Praak arrived, a stampede-like situation occurred. There was a stage on the side, and a lot of people gathered on it, as a result of which, it collapsed. Kalkaji Mandir administration, Police, and volunteers managed the situation and reduced the damage to a great extent... The main stage did not collapse. Towards the side, a platform made for devotees to sit on had collapsed. There were somewhere between 30-50 thousand devotees..."
