A group of diving club members from Varkala were scuba diving as usual. That's when they stumble upon a shipwreck in the seabed at a depth of 50 metres.
According to the three-member team led by Varkala Water Sports Administrator Vinod Radhakrishnan, the ship is 12-foot-high and 100-foot-long, reported Manorama Online. The visuals were captured using GoPro.
The ship was reportedly between Varkala, known for its serene beaches, and Anchuthengu, an erstwhile British exclave in the Travancore princely state.
The wreck is speculated to be a British cargo ship destroyed by Japanese submarines during World War II. Others claim that it is a centuries old Dutch ship. However, there is no official confirmation regarding the shipwreck's origin or identity.
