The alleged gang-rape of a foreign tourist in Jharkhand shocked the country on Saturday. The survivor was on a road trip with her spouse and was attacked on Friday night. The Jharkhand Police have confirmed multiple arrests in connection with the incident and efforts are on to nab the remaining accused who are at large.
Here is what we know so far about the gang-rape of the Spanish woman in Jharkhand's Dumka
1. The incident took place at Kurumahat in the Hansdiha police station area of Dumka, around 300 km from the state capital Ranchi. The woman, a 28-year-old Spaniard, was allegedly assaulted on Friday night at a makeshift tent that she had set up alongside her husband to spend the night.
2. The couple had reached Dumka from Bangladesh on two motorcycles. They intended to reach Nepal via Bihar.
3. The crime came to light when a police patrolling team found two people on the side of the road around 11 pm on Friday. A language barrier restrained the cops from understanding what the couple were saying.
4. Nevertheless, the officers rushed the duo to a local hospital. The two were in a condition to ride the vehicles and travelled to Saraiyahat Community Health Centre on their motorcycles, covering a distance of about 60 km with police escort.
5. It was at the hospital the couple told the doctors that the woman was sexually assaulted. She remains admitted at the Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital in Dumka.
6. Senior police officials told news agency PTI that an investigation got underway in the early hours of Saturday. Immediately after speaking to the woman, the cops started interrogating suspects. Among these were some of the men who were involved in the crime. They were taken into custody as they confessed to having assaulted the tourist.
7. Three persons have been arrested in connection with the crime and a manhunt is underway to nab the remaining accused. They have reportedly spilt the names of other men involved in the incident. A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to nab all the accused at the earliest.
8. News agency PTI, quoting police sources claimed that seven or eight local youths were involved in the incident.
9. The Superintendent of Police told the media that police were not informed earlier about the arrival of any foreign tourists in Dumka.
10. Her husband, a sexagenarian, also needed medical attention as he had sustained minor injuries in the incident. Both are out of danger, a doctor confirmed.
