CM Mamata Banerjee stable; doctors say injury caused due to 'push from behind'

The CM was advised to stay in the hospital but she 'preferred to go home'

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who suffered injuries on her forehead and nose, is stable and has been discharged from the hospital, said a senior official of the state administration.

However, SSKM hospital director Manimoy Bandyopadhyay's statement that the chief minister was admitted to the hospital with a "history of (a) fall within the vicinity of her home due to some push from behind" raised concerns.

The hospital director told reporters on Thursday evening that doctors administered three stitches on her forehead and another on the nose. "Chief Minister of West Bengal reported to our hospital today around 7.30 pm with a history of a fall within the vicinity of her home due to some push from behind. She had a cerebral concussion and had a sharp cut over her forehead and nose, which was bleeding profusely," Bandyopadhyay said while addressing reporters outside the hospital.

Mamata, 69, was inside her Kalighat residence in South Kolkata when she sustained injuries.

The Bengal CM underwent three stitches on her forehead and one on her nose and was discharged following necessary medical tests at the hospital. "She had a cerebral concussion and had a sharp cut on her forehead and nose which was bleeding profusely. Initially, she was assessed by senior doctors of the neurosurgery, medicine, and cardiology departments of our institute and her vitals were stabilised. Three stitches were applied on her forehead, and one on her nose and the required dressing was done. Investigations like ECG, echocardiogram, CT-Scan, and Doppler were done," Bandyopadhyay said.

Though the chief minister was advised to stay in the hospital, she 'preferred to go home'.

"The CM's health condition is stable. She had a good sleep in the night as senior doctors kept a close watch on her throughout the period. This morning there will be another assessment of her condition," the official told PTI on Friday morning.

However, the police said yet are to receive any complaint in connection with the fall. The department, however, has upped the security arrangements in and around Banerjee's residence. "As of now, there has been no complaint lodged in connection with the fall of the CM. We have increased the security around the CM's residence," the officer told PTI, adding that they were looking at whether there was any security lapse or not.

Banerjee gets a "Z+ category" cover and has a special team of officers looking after her security and even at her residence.

Earlier in the day, the TMC informed that Banerjee sustained a 'major injury' to her forehead after a fall at her residence in Kolkata's Kalighat on Thursday. The party also shared Mamata's pictures from the hospital bed, with a deep cut on her forehead and blood dripping down her face.

Party national general secretary and Banerjee's nephew Abhishek took her to the hospital in his vehicle and got her admitted to the hospital.
