Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on Tuesday, took on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party the TMC, saying her government is silent on issues of corruption and infiltration, and announced the number of seats the BJP would win in the state.
Addressing a rally at Karandighi in Raiganj constituency, Shah said the BJP has set a target of winning as many as 35 seats from West Bengal. "You gave us 18 seats the last time. Modiji gave Ram Mandir. Give us 35 seats, and we will stop infiltration," he assured.
Taking on the Mamata-led government in the state on the issue of corruption, he said, "The Calcutta High Court yesterday gave a judgment cancelling thousands of appointments (made through the 2016 teacher recruitment test). It is a matter of shame that jobs were sold for lakhs of rupees. This cut-money culture and corruption must end in West Bengal. The TMC can never stop it, only the BJP can stop it."
Slamming the Congress over remarks by its leaders that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) would be repealed if they are voted to power, Shah said, "Neither Congress nor Mamata Banerjee can dare to touch the CAA."
He claimed that the Congress and Banerjee are against the CAA as they want to help the infiltrators. "They are opposing the law since it will help Hindu refugees get citizenship," he claimed.
The home minister alleged that Banerjee does not let the Centre government schemes reach people as she is afraid that if these schemes reach people, they will support Modi.
He promised to end infiltration and rid Bengal of violence. "If you want to free Bengal of violence, stop infiltration, give citizenship to refugees, stop the disrespect of our mothers and sisters as it happened in Sandeshkhali, there is only one way, make Modi the prime minister."
The BJP won 18 seats in West Bengal in 2019 polls, while TMC won 22.
