The Janata Dal (Secular) core committee has decided to suspend its Hassan Lok Sabha seat candidate Prajwal Revanna on Tuesday over allegations of sexual harassment against him. The party has also issued a showcause notice against him.
The core committee of the party met on Tuesday and announced the decision. Revanna is the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D.Devegowda and nephew of former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.
Core committee president G.T. Devegowda said, "We welcome SIT against Prajwal Revanna. We've taken a decision to recommend our party's national president to suspend him from the party till the SIT investigation is completed.”
A pen drive containing over 2000 videos of Prajwal Revanna abusing women surfaced close to the second phase of Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka. Prajwal (33) is the BJP-JD(S) alliance candidate for the Lok Sabha election Hassan, which went to the polls on Friday. Kumaraswamy had sought to distance himself from his nephew and brother H.D. Revanna, who was also booked for sexual harassment and criminal intimidation.
Earlier, before the meeting commenced, Kumaraswamy told presspersons, “We are not going to protect him, we will take severe action but the government's responsibility is more. Not only as an uncle but as a common man of the country we have to move further. This is a shameful issue, I am not protecting any person. We have fought against these kinds of illegal things. This is a serious issue. Who is running the government, they have to expose the real picture and the ground reality has to be exposed by the govt and not me.”
Prajwal reportedly flew to Frankfurt on Saturday, a day after the Lok Sabha polls. The Karnataka government has formed a SIT to probe the allegations.
