As many as 10 persons died and several are feared trapped as a stone quarry collapsed in Mizoram’s capital Aizawl. Rescue operations are progressing at the accident site.
The collapse occurred at around 6am on Tuesday due to incessant rains, officials said. According to officials, the collapse happened in an area between Melthum and Hlimen on the southern outskirts of the Aizawl town.
Earlier, Senior police officials told PTI that the bodies of five persons have been recovered and heavy rains are hindering the rescue operations. Mizoram police DGP Anil Shukla said police personnel are engaged in rescue operations.
According to officials, rains triggered landslides at several places in the state. Aizawl has been cut off from the rest of the country due to a landslide on National Highway 6 at Hunthar, they said.
Besides, several intra-state highways have also been disrupted by landslides. Because of the rains, all schools were closed and government employees, except those involved in providing essential services, were asked to work from home.
