The BJP had set an ambitious target of achieving over 400 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, but as the results started trickling in Tuesday, a different picture seems to emerge. While there appears to be no doubt that Narendra Modi-led BJP will form government for a third time, the party's seat share appears to have dwindled, from 303 seats in 2019 to just over 230 seats in 2014.

Here's a look at how the BJP is faring in down south in the Lok Saha polls.

Andhra Pradesh

While the BJP is leading only in three of the total 25 seats in the state, the TDP-BJP-Jana Sena Party (JSP) alliance is set to upset the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in the state. The coalition was leading in 21 of the total 25 constituencies.

The NDA, comprising TDP, BJP and Janasena Party in the state is heading towards a landslide victory by winning one seat and leading in 157 segments of the 175 member state assembly.

Telangana

The BJP and the Congress are engaged in a neck-and-neck contest in Telangana.

The BJP candidates were leading in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Medak, Secunderabad, Malkajgiri, Chevella and Mahabubnagar Lok Sabha seats.

The Congress nominees were leading in Peddapalle (SC), Mahabubabad (ST), Warangal (SC), Bhongir, Khammam, Nalgonda, Nagarkurnool (SC) and Zaheerabad.

Karnataka

The BJP appears to be failing to recreate its 2019 magic in Karnataka when it won 25 of the 28 seats in the state.

The BJP was leading in 17 seats according to the Election Commission figures.

The seats where the BJP is dominating include Belgaum, Bagalkot, Bijapur, Shimoga, Udupi Chikmagalur, Mysore, Bangalore Rural, Bangalore North, Bangalore central, Bangalore South, Chikkballapur, Uttara Kannada, Dharwad, Chitradurga and Tumkur.

Tamil Nadu

The BJP has failed to make a mark in the southern state. Out of the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu, the DMK and its allies appear all set to win 37 segments and AIADMK and BJP's ally PMK may get one seat each.

To its credit, however, the BJP crossed the 10 per cent vote share-mark in Tamil Nadu and has so far registered a share of 10.21 per cent, though it could not emerge in lead positions anywhere.

Kerala

Kerala appears to have offered some solace to the BJP as the party managed to win a seat for the first time in the state. BJP candidate and actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi appears poised for a win in the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat with a comfortable lead of over 74,000 votes.
