The ministry of education has set up a four-member panel to look into allegations of irregularities in NEET-UG medical entrance examination results. The committee is expected to submit its recommendations within a week.

"The panel will meet soon and review the grace marks awarded to over 1,500  NEET-UG medical entrance exam candidates," National Testing Agency Director General Subodh Kumar Singh said.

The agency denied any irregularities and said the changes made in the NCERT textbooks and grace marks for losing time at the examination centres were some of the reasons behind the students scoring higher marks.

Addressing presspersons, Singh said, “Our committee met and they perused all the details of the centres and the CCTVs. They found out that at some centres the time was lost and the students should be compensated for that. The committee thought they could address the grievances and compensate the students. So the marks of some students were increased. Due to that, the concerns of some students have surfaced because certain candidates got 718 and 719 marks.”

The DG said the results were released after considering all factors. “Out of 4,750 centres, this problem was limited to six centres. And, out of 24 lakh students, only 1,600 students faced the issue,” Singh said. The NTA DG said the integrity of this examination was not compromised throughout the country. “There was no paper leak. The whole exam process has been very transparent,” he said.

The move comes amid allegations of inflation of marks leading to 67 candidates sharing first rank in the exam.

The NTA DG said the panel headed by former UPSC chairman will submit its recommendations within a week and the results of candidates might be revised.
