Narendra Modi to swear in as PM for the third time today: 10 points

Modi visited Rajghat, Sadaiv Atal and war memorial on Sunday morning

Narendra Modi will swear in as the Prime Minister for the third time on Sunday, equalling the feat of the first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who won in the 1952, 1957 and 1962 general elections.

The ceremony will take place at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 7.15 pm on Sunday. Ahead of the ceremony, Modi visited Rajghat on Sunday morning accompanied by senior leader Hardeep Puri. He also visited Sadaiv Atal to pay tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, ahead of his swearing-in ceremony, to be held today at Rashtrapati Bhawan. He also paid tributes at the war memorial.

Here are some important points

1) Prominent allies such as the TDP, JD(U) and Shiv Sena are likely to be represented in the coalition government.  

2) Ram Mohan Naidu of the TDP, Lalan Singh, Sanjay Jha and Ram Nath Thakur of the JD(U), and Chirag Paswan of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) may get the coveted cabinet berths, reported PTI.

3) Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh are seen within the party as a certainty in the new Cabinet. Other names doing rounds include Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Basavaraj Bommai, Manohar Lal Khattar and Sarbananda Sonowal are strong contenders for joining the government.

4) Leaders from India's neighbourhood and the Indian Ocean Region will attend the ceremony. They include Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe, President of Maldives Mohamed Muizzu, Vice-President of Seychelles Ahmed Afif, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Prime Minister of Nepal Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' and Prime Minister of Bhutan Tshering Tobgay have accepted invitations to the ceremony.

5) People from different walks of life have been invited to the ceremony.

Among the 10 loco pilots of Indian Railways who will attend the event include Surekha Yadav, the pilot of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus-Solapur Vande Bharat train in Maharashtra.

6) Sources in the Rashtrapati Bhavan have told THE WEEK that the guests will be offered traditional vegetarian thali, with delicacies from all major regions in the country. Both Modi and President Droupadi Murmu are vegetarians, and important Gujarati and Odia cuisines will be on offer.

7) Security has been stepped up with Delhi Police imposing prohibitory orders and the national capital has been declared a no-flying zone for June 9 and 10 for the ceremony.

8) Air space curbs will be in place from 3 pm to 11 pm. However, it will not affect IAF, BSF and Army aviation helicopter operations. State-owned aircraft and helicopters can fly with the governor or chief minister during the period when the curbs will be in place, according to the NOTAM (Notice to Airmen). Landing or take-off of non-scheduled flights of scheduled airlines, and chartered flights will not be permitted during the period.

9) Congress has said that its leaders were yet to receive invitations for the swearing-in ceremony

10) Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee announced that her party would not attend the event. "Neither we have got any invitation nor are we attending it," Banerjee said in Kolkata.
