The top four ministers of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet—Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman and S. Jaishankar—retained their respective home, defence, finance and external affairs portfolios.

Nitin Gadkari will continue as road transport minister, while Dharmendra Pradhan will retain his education portfolio.

Kiren Rijiju has been moved from the earth sciences ministry to the parliamentary affairs ministry, while Arjun Ram Meghwal will continue as law minister. Sarbananda Sonowal has retained the shipping portfolio, according to an official statement.

Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is the new agriculture and rural development minister, while BJP president J.P. Nadda has been given the health ministry.

Nadda had held the same portfolio in the Modi government's first term before he took over as the BJP's working president in 2019 and became the full-fledged party president in January 2020 after Amit Shah was appointed as the Union home minister.

The portfolios were announced after Modi held the first meeting of his new cabinet on Monday evening.

The meeting was held at the prime minister's 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, residence a day after the swearing-in of the new NDA government. Modi and 71 ministers took oath of office and secrecy on Sunday at a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
