Three Keralites and a Tamilian were among the Indian victims identified.

The condition of seven people undergoing treatment is said to be critical. The injured have been admitted to Adan, Jaber and Mubarak hospitals, the state media reported.

The fire broke out at a six-story building in Block 4 of Mangaf around 4:30 am local time, Manorama Online said in a report.

The NBTC camp was accommodating as many as 196 people during the time of the tragedy. The NBTC group is reportedly owned by Kerala native KG Abraham. Employees at NBTC's supermarket also lived in the ill-fated building, OnManorama said.

The origin of the fire was reportedly traced to the room of security personnel on the ground floor of the flat complex, Manorma Online said in a report. A short circuit is believed to have caused the fire.

The fire soon spread to the kitchen where LPG cylinders were stored, aggravating the impact.

Asphyxiation caused several deaths while some occupants of the top floors, who tried to escape the smoke by jumping out, also didn't survive.
