A high-level meeting to review the security situation in Manipur was chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday. This is the second such meeting chaired by the Home Minister, since assuming the office, after reviewing the Jammu and Kashmir security situation in the wake of the recent terror attack.

Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Intelligence Bureau Chief Tapan Deka, Army Chief General Manoj Pande, Army Chief (Designate) Lt General Upendra Dwivedi, GoC Three Core H.S. Sahi, Security Advisor to Manipur Kuldeep Singh, Manipur Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi, Manipur DGP Rajiv Singh and Assam Rifles DG Pradeep Chandran Nair joined the meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs in North Block in Delhi.

The meeting comes after Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey visited Shah on Sunday and briefed him about the prevailing violence in the state.

Fresh violence, claiming lives and injuring many others, was reported in several parts of Manipur. Recently, violence in the Jiribam district has claimed at least two lives. Over 100 houses have been burnt and more than 2,000 people were displaced.

On Monday over 100 trucks carrying essential items to Imphal were blocked on NH 53 near Tatbung in Manipur's Tamenglong district. According to police, people called for an indefinite blockade of the Imphal-Silchar highway to protest violence in Jiribam district.

RSS stresses on Manipur peace

As the Narendra Modi government got re-elected for the third term, the RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat stressed that Manipur peace should be a priority for the government.

Bhagwat had expressed concern over peace eluding Manipur even after one year. While addressing a gathering of RSS trainees in Nagpur, he had said, "Manipur has been waiting for peace for the last year. There was peace in Manipur 10 years ago. It felt like gun culture had finished there. But the state has suddenly seen violence".

"The unrest either got triggered or was triggered, but Manipur is burning and people are facing its extreme heat", the RSS chief had said.

Ethnic clashes that broke out in Manipur between the Meiteis and Kukis on May 3, 2023, claimed over 200 lives.
