In a horrific tragedy, a 22-year-old woman was brutally killed on a busy road near Mumbai while scores of onlookers watched as the attacker beat her to death in Maharashtra. The accused had used a spanner to hit the woman, who was his girlfriend. She was struck with 18 blows, said the police officials.
The accused, Rohit Yadav (32) and the victim Arati Yadav were neighbours in Nalla Sopara and were in a relationship for the past few years. He suspected she was having an affair with someone else as she stopped talking to him of late.
While hitting her multiple times, he had repeatedly said "Why did you do this to me."
Many people remained mute spectators as the incident took place. She was on her way to work when he hit her.
The video footage of the incident in the Chinchpada locality of Vasai had gone viral on social media. The footage showed a large crowd watching the attack, but no one intervened to help the woman as the man rained blows on her with the spanner, police said.
The accused had hit her several times after she collapsed to the ground. The Valiv police have registered a murder case and arrested the accused. According to the police, he did not flee the scene, he sat on the steps near the body.
A team from the Valiv police rushed to the spot and sent the body for a post-mortem. Police have detained a man and a woman who shot videos of the attack and uploaded them on social media.
