Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati on Sunday declared nephew Akash Anand her successor and made him the party's national coordinator, a month after she removed him from the post.

The decision came after a national level meeting of the party in Lucknow.

"BSP's national president Mayawati has once again given Akash Anand a chance to work in the party with full maturity. He will continue to hold all his posts in the party as before,” the party said in a statement.

"That is, he will remain Mayawati's only successor along with being the party's national coordinator," it said.

In a separate statement, Mayawati said she is hopeful Akash will emerge as a mature leader at every level in the interest of the party and movement.

"I am hopeful about him that now he will definitely emerge as a fully mature leader at every level in the interest of his party and movement. The people of the party will also now encourage him by giving him more respect and honour than before. So that now he can live up to all my expectations in the future," she said.

In a surprise decision on May 7 amid the Lok Sabha elections, the BSP chief had removed Akash as party's national co-ordinator and her political successor until the time he attained “maturity”.

Akash was elevated as the party’s national coordinator in December last.

On April 28, he was booked in a case of violation of Model Code of Conduct along with four others for allegedly using objectionable language at a poll rally in Sitapur.

The action had come after the district administration's took suo motu cognisance of Akash's speech at the rally.
