A team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the alleged irregularities in the UGC-NET examinations was attacked in Bihar’s Nawada on Sunday.

The incident occurred in the evening when a group of local people gathered around the CBI vehicles and heckled the officers who were on their way to Kasiadeeh village in the area.

Based on a complaint by the agency, police have arrested four persons who were later sent to judicial custody.

The National Testing Agency cancelled the University Grants Commission – National Eligibility Test on June 19, a day after it was held across the country, following prima facie indications that the integrity of exam was compromised.

The Union education ministry handed over the investigation to the CBI which filed an FIR on Thursday against unidentified people.

UGC-NET is a test to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for ‘Assistant Professor’ and ‘Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor’ in Indian universities and colleges.

The exams were cancelled amid a massive row on the medical entrance exam NEET over alleged irregularities, with the issue now before the Supreme Court.

The CBI has taken over the probe into the NEET exam row, too, with the agency filing an FIR on a reference from the Union education ministry on Sunday.

The agency has formed special teams that are en route to Godhra and Patna, where cases of question paper leaks have been registered by police.

The CBI also plans to take over the investigation of these cases registered by the police in Gujarat and Bihar, PTI reported quoting officials.

The allegations of irregularities in the medical entrance exam held on May 5 sparked protests in several states, litigation and a political slugfest, with the opposition accusing the government of toying with the future of students.
