Kallakuruchi hooch tragedy: Death toll increases to 57, over 150 persons under treatment

The death toll in tragic hooch tragedy in Tamil Nadu increased to 57 on Sunday and over 150 persons are still undergoing treatment at hospitals in Kallakuruchi and neighbouring districts.

According to reports, four women and a transwoman succumbed during the late hours of Saturday increasing the death toll to 57. Until Saturday, 211 persons were undergoing treatment in hospitals.

As per reports on local media, as many as 106 persons are undergoing treatment at Kallakuruchi government hospital, 30 at Salem government hospital, four at Villupuram government hospital and 17 at JIPMER-Puducherry. According to officials, eight persons are on ventilator support at Salem hospital.

The CB-CID have till now arrested 11 persons in connection with the case. The one-man judicial commission appointed by the state government has begun a probe and visited families of victims at Karunapuram recently.

Denying opposition’s claims, Health Minister Ma. Subramanian said the state has sufficient stock of antidote to treat methanol consumption and treatment is being provided as per standard treatment protocol.
