A Bengaluru court granted Tamil Nadu sports minister and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin bail in a case registered in connection with his “eradicate Sanatana Dharma” remark.

Udhayanidhi reached the 42nd Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court on Tuesday after the court issued notice to him based on a petition filed by a social activist Paramesh. He was granted bail with a surety of Rs one lakh. The case will be next heard on August 8.

Addressing a meeting of the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association in Chennai in September, Udhayanidhi allegedly likened Sanatan Dharma to coronavirus, malaria and dengue and said such things should not be opposed but destroyed. "Few things cannot be opposed, that should be abolished only. We can't oppose Dengue, Mosquitoes, Malaria, or Corona, we have to eradicate them. That's how we have to eradicate Sanatana. Rather opposing Sanatana it should be eradicated,” he had said. The statement had drawn widespread condemnation from various quarters and he is facing cases in other states as well besides Bengaluru.
