Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday announced a state-of-the-art international airport will be constructed in industrial town Hosur, a district bordering Bengaluru.

Making the announcement under Rule 110 in the state assembly, the chief minister said the government considers the aviation facility important for the economic and social development of Hosur, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts.

“Hosur has been attracting more investments in the electronics and electric vehicle manufacturing sector for the last few years. For its part, the state government was implementing various projects aimed at improving the infrastructure in the rapidly growing city of Hosur. Accordingly, a new master plan for Hosur is nearing completion,” he said.

“The new international airport will be built over an area of 2,000 acres of land and will have a capacity to handle 30 million passengers a year.

The chief minister also announced a modern library-cum-knowledge centre will be built in Tiruchirappalli and it will be named after late Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

With the Bengaluru traffic making travel to the Kempegowda International Airport difficult, the new airport will also cater to travellers from South Bengaluru. EV vehicle giants like Ola, Ather, Simple Energy, and TVS motor company have their manufacturing facilities in Hosur. The industrial town is also home to Tata Electronics, a key supplier of tech giant Apple.
