Heavy rains lashed the national capital on Friday, bringing life to a standstill as traffic has been affected and flights have been cancelled.

The Safdarjung weather station recorded 153.7 mm of rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) defines very heavy rain as rainfall amounting to between 124.5 and 244.4 mm in a day.

Flights affected

Due to heavy rains, SpiceJet flights have been cancelled as Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport will remain partially closed for operations until further notice.

In another update, Spicejet said, "All affected SpiceJet flights departing from Terminal 1 are being re-accommodated to Terminal 3. Necessary information has been communicated to all the passengers via SMS/Email. Due to heavy traffic congestion enroute Delhi Airport, all passengers are requested to ensure sufficient travel time and keep a check on their flight status"

Metro entry/exits closed

Due to heavy rains, entry/exit is closed at Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector - 25 Metro station, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said in a tweet.

Besides, the shuttle service from Delhi Aerocity Metro station to Terminal 1-IGI Airport has been suspended.

Normal service on all other lines, it added.

"Traffic is affected on Outer Ring Road in both carriageways from Shantivan towards ISBT and vice-versa due to waterlogging near Y-Point Saleemgarh and Nigambodh Ghat. Kindly plan your journey accordingly," the traffic police said in a tweet.

IMD warnings

"Light to moderate Spells of rainfall (occasional intense spells) accompanied with isolated thunderstorms & lightning likely over Notheast Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Northwest Madhya Pradesh, West & Northeast Uttar Pradesh, Northwest & east Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal," the India Meteorological Department said in a tweet.

The IMD has asked people to avoid going to areas that face water logging problems often, check for traffic congestion on your route, and be updated with weather warnings.

Moderate to intense spell of rain over parts of Delhi-NCR and adjoining areas very likely to cause slippery roads, low visibility, disruption in traffic and localised water logging in low-lying areas, it further said.
