In a major boost to self-reliance in India's India defence capabilities, a new explosive, that is twice as powerful as TNT (Trinitrotoluene) has been developed and certified by the Indian Navy. According to an Economic Times report, the explosive, SEBEX 2, is one of the most powerful non-nuclear explosives available in the world.

The explosive, which has been developed by Economic Explosives Limited—a subsidiary of Solar Industries India Limited—that manufactures industrial explosives and propulsion systems for space applications, has the potential to bring in significant improvements in the destructive power of bombs and artillery shells without increasing their weight.

According to officials, the development of the explosive will increase the potency and efficiency of weapons and ammunition.

The composition based on high-melting explosive will boost the "lethality of warheads, aerial bombs, artillery shells and other munitions which utilise blast and fragmentation effects to inflict damage to targets", ET quoted sources as saying.

The explosive also has great export potential as countries across the globe are looking to add further lethality to their weapons systems.

According to the report, Economic Explosives Limited is working on another variant that will have 2.3 explosive power of TNT.

"Conventional Explosives, like DENTEX/TORPEX, which are used in conventional warheads, aerial bombs and many other ammunitions worldwide have TNT equivalence of 1.25-1.30" Moneycontrol quoted a Solar Industries official has been saying.

TNT equivalence refers to a convention that is used to compare the energy released in an explosion to that of an equivalent mass of trinitrotoluene.

The most conventional explosive that India possesses has a TNT equivalence of about 1.50.
