Normal life was thrown off gear in Mumbai after heavy rains drowned all major roads resulting in traffic chaos. The areas that witnessed waterlogging include Buntara Bhavan in Kurla East, King's Circle and Western Express Highway near Vile Parle.

Mumbai recorded over 300 mm of rainfall at various places from 1 am to 7 am on Monday, reported ANI. The heavy rains caused waterlogging of tracks on both the Main and Harbour corridors on Sunday later hours, resulting in the disruption of suburban train services on the Central Railway routes.

The Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) said in a statement that Central Railway suburban services were affected due to heavy rains."Train services are affected at Sion and between Bhandup and Nahur stations. Rainwater was above the tracks so trains were stopped for nearly an hour. Now the water has receded a bit so trains are restarting but services are still affected," the CPRO said.

A statement by Western Railway said suburban trains were running up to 10 minutes late as water was above track level between Matunga Road and Dadar due to heavy rains. "High-capacity water pumps are being used to drain water away from the railway tracks," a statement by the Western Railway said.

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) said that many of its buses were diverted due to waterlogging.

Schools shut

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in a statement issued in the morning said heavy rain is also expected on Monday. It declared a holiday for the first session of the day for all the BMC, government and private schools and colleges in Mumbai municipal limits in order to avoid inconvenience to students. "The decision for the next session will be announced after reviewing the situation," the statement said.

NDRF deployed

Due to ongoing rains in various parts of Maharashtra, teams of NDRF have been deployed in Thane, Vasai (Palghar), Mahad (Raigad), Chiplun (Ratnagiri), Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara Ghatkopar, Kurla and Sindhudurg.
