Mumbai Police on Tuesday arrested Mihir Shah, the main accused in the hit-and-run case in which a woman was killed, nearly 48 hours after the incident.

The 24-year-old is the son of Shiv Sena Eknath Shinde faction leader Rajesh Shah.

Mihir’s mother and sister have also been taken into custody as the investigators believe they helped him evade arrest. They, however, have not been named as accused in the case.

Police said Mihir’s father had also taken an active part in ensuring his son's escape and also had plans to tow away the offending vehicle.

Rajesh Shah was arrested in the case, but a Mumbai court granted him bail after a one-day police custody. His family driver Rajrishi Bidawat was also arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody.

The incident took place on Sunday morning when Mihir’s car fatally knocked down Kaveri Nakhwa (45) and injured her husband Pradeep who were travelling on their two-wheeler in Mumbai’s Worli area.

Mumbai Police had formed 11 teams to nab Mihir and also put out a Look Out Circular (LOC) against him.

According to police, the CCTV footage showed that Nakhwa was dragged on the road for around 1.5 kolometre after being hit by the car. Footage showed Mihir and Bidawat pulling the woman off the bonnet, placing her on the road and then mowing her down again while reversing the luxury vehicle.
