Mumbai Police is likely to question the girlfriend of Mihir Shah, the key accused in the hit-and-run case, as they found that he had called her over phone more than 40 times after the incident.

Mihir, son of ruling Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Shah, was arrested on Tuesday, nearly 48 hours after his BMW car fatally knocked down a woman and injured her husband, who were travelling on a two-wheeler in Mumbai’s Worli area on Sunday morning.

Police said the victim, Kaveri Nakhwa (45), was dragged on road for 1.5 kilometre by the speeding vehicle before Mihir swapped seats with his driver Rajrishi Bidawat and fled the spot in another vehicle. The driver allegedly ran over her while reversing the BMW.

A local court on Wednesday sent Mihir to police custody till July 16. During the hearing, the police told court that the accused should be given maximum custody as they need to probe who helped him escape and also since the car's number plate is yet to be recovered.

Bidawat was arrested on Sunday and remanded in police custody till July 11. Rajesh Shah had also been arrested in the case but was granted bail after one-day police custody.

According to police, after the incident, Mihir took an auto and went to his girlfriend’s home in Goregaon. He rested there for two hours while his girlfriend informed his sister about the incident, NDTV reported quoting police sources.

Mihir’s mother and two sisters took him to a resort in Shahpur and made him stay there even as the police had launched a manhunt for him.
