Waterlogged Mumbai on alert as IMD warns of intense showers; flights disrupted

A high tide of 3.8 meters is also expected around 4 pm

Mumbai was again inundated as incessant showers overnight drowned the city roads, disrupting traffic. The showers also hit flight services with IndiGo Airlines warning passengers about potential delays and congestion.

The heavy rains that lashed the city intensified early morning, causing waterlogging in major areas, including in King's Circle area, Navi Mumbai and the APMC Market. This is the second time this month that the city battles a flood situation. 

The IMD has warned of intense spells of rain at isolated places in the districts of Mumbai during the next 3-4 hours.  A high tide of 3.8 meters is also expected around 4 pm. The weather agency has also warned of heavy rains this weekend. 

Videos from APMC Market, Turbhe Mafco Market and King's Circle show residents wading through flooded streets while Navi Mumbai saw heavy waterlogging adding to the misery of commuters. 

Many flight services were disrupted afterthick cloud cover severely impacted flight operations. Budget carrier IndiGo took to X (formally Twitter) to alert passengers about the situation. “Flights are impacted due to heavy rains and air traffic congestion in #Mumbai. Do keep a tab on the flight status. Wishing you happy and safe travels!,” IndiGo wrote. 

Meanwhile, the IMD has said that a monsoon trough and a cyclonic circulation over Mumbai have caused strong westerly winds.

According to recent data released by IMD, the average rainfall recorded at 8 am in the Central Mumbai region was 93.16 mm, in the Eastern Suburbs it was 66.03 mm and in and in the Western Suburbs, it was 78.93 mm.

The IMD has also warned of a high tide of 3.91 meters around 4 pm on Friday and during this time, 13-feet high waves will rise in the sea.

The heavy rains could also cause flooding problems in several low-lying areas. Earlier today, it rained heavily in Parel, Dadar, Borivali, Kandivali, Andheri, Santacruz, and Sion in Mumbai.
