Kerala weather news: On July 14, high waves and storm likely; IMD issues Orange alert for Kozhikode, Malappuram

The India Meteorological Department  (IMD) said that Kerala will receive fairly widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds during the next five days due to the influence of the cyclonic circulation over north Gujarat and another over west-central Bay of Bengal. In view of the weather alert, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) cautioned people against standing or parking vehicles under trees, saying they could get uprooted or their branches may break and fall down due to strong winds.

Here are five things people of Kerala should know about weather predictions for the state:

1. The weather department also predicted thunderstorms with moderate rainfall and gusty winds at places in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam district on Saturday.

2. The Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has said that there is a possibility of high waves and storm surges along the Kerala and Tamil Nadu coasts till June 14, Sunday, reported news agency PTI. 

3. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts from June 14, Sunday to June 16, Tuesday.

4. According to the IMD, Kerala and Lakshadweep fishermen should avoid venturing into the sea from June 13, Saturday to June 17, Wednesday. 

5. Keralites residing in unsecured houses should move to safer buildings and follow any other particular directions issued by authorities, the IMD mentioned in its statement.
