A patient who was admitted to Delhi's government-run Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital was shot dead by a teenager on Sunday, reports said. The victim was identified as Riyazuddin, a resident of Khajoori Khas in northeast Delhi.

According to news reports, the shooter is at large following the murder. 32-year-old Riyazuddin was admitted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital on June 23 after he sought treatment for stomach ache, NDTV said in a report. He was admitted to the Surgery Ward on June 22 and operated on June 24 for perforation peritonitis.

It was around 4:00 pm in the afternoon that the assailant, reportedly 18 years old, shot Riyazuddin who was admitted at the third floor of the hospital.

The accused fired three to four rounds before fleeing the scene, the news report said. The police have yet to find out the reason for the murder.

CCTV footage in and around the hospital complex was being analysed to gather information about the accused.

Meanwhile, the hospital's Residents' Doctors Association declared an indefinite strike citing safety concerns. "Our repeated appeals for enhanced security have been ignored, culminating in this tragic event. Until the Delhi Government ensures a secure environment for everyone within the hospital, we cannot continue our duties," an RDA spokesperson said in the statement.

"The strike will continue until fundamental security improvements are effectively implemented and communicated," the statement said.

Doctors said the emergency services will remain operational during the strike.

Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said, "a security review of all hospitals will be carried out and no negligence will be tolerated."

More details are awaited
