Uttar Pradesh BJP president Bhupendra Chaudhary has offered to resign taking responsibility of the party’s poor show in the recent Lok Sabha elections. According to reports, the party is preparing for an organisational rejig and a cabinet reshuffle in the politically crucial state.

Chaudhary offered to step down during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president J.P. Nadda on Wednesday. The meeting came amid signs of dissonant voices emerging from within the party in the state where it suffered shock losses in the Lok Sabha polls at the hands of the SP-Congress alliance.

UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya was also present in these meetings. Maurya's differences with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over an host of issues had come out in the open at a recent party meeting where the Deputy CM said "organisation is always bigger than government and no one can be bigger than the organisation".

Maurya reiterated his statement in a post on X on Wednesday.

According to reports, several BJP leaders in the state are not happy with the working style of Adityanath though he is seen by his supporters as one of the popular chief ministers in the country.

Chaudhary, a Jat leader, took over as the party’s state unit chief in 2022. The buzz is that the party is now keen on appointing an OBC leader to the post.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP managed to win only 33 seats out of 80, while the Samajwadi Party won 37. In 2019, the BJP had won 61 seats.

The immediate priority of the saffron party is the 10 assembly seats going to bypolls. The Election Commission is likely to announce the date for the polls soon.
