Heavy rain: IMD 'red alert' for Mumbai; waterlogging in Delhi | 10 points

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and a yellow alert for Delhi as heavy showers threw life out of gear in both cities. While the weather department forecast rains till the end of the week in Delhi, the Mumbai Police on Thursday issued an advisory asking residents to stay indoors, until essential, on Friday.

Here are the updates:

1) Delhi faced traffic jams in various areas, including Nauroji Nagar, Bhikaji Cama Place and Motibagh Ring Road, due to heavy rains and waterlogging on Friday morning. 

2) The IMD said the Delhi University area received 89.5 mm and the IGNOU area received 34.5 mm of rain from Thursday morning to Friday. 

3) Delhi and NCR region are likely to experience more rain during the next few hours. "Light rainfall/drizzle is very likely to occur at a few places in Delhi (Narela, Alipur, Badili, Pitampura, Punjabi Bagh, Seelampur, Shahadra, Vivek Vihar, Red fort, President House, Rajiv Chowk, ITO, India Gate, Lodi Road, RK Puram, Defence Colony, Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar, IGNOU, NCR (Hindon AF Station, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Ballabhgarh) Meham (Haryana) Saharanpur, Deoband, Muzaffarnagar, Sadabad (UP) during next 2 hours," the IMD said.

4) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi received at least 13 complaints of waterlogging and eight incidents of uprooted trees from different localities on Thursday. 

5) In Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation declared that all the schools and colleges in its area will operate normally on Friday.

6) The weather agency has predicted extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms throughout the day on Friday.

7) The financial capital has been witnessing waterlogging since Thursday, prompting delays in local train services. Over a dozen flights were also cancelled and 10 were diverted to nearby areas on Thursday.

8) Pune too witnessed heavy rains with officials deploying NDRF and the army to carry out rescue operations in Sinhagad Road, Bavdhan, Baner and Deccan Gymkhana areas.

9) Monsoon rains lashed the Western Ghats on Thursday night with Tamhini receiving 556 mm, Bhira 401 and Lonavala 329 mm rainfall. An average rainfall of 250 mm was also recorded at other places in Ghat Matha. 

10) The IMD predicts moderate spells of rain at isolated places in the districts of Palghar, Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri, Mumbai and Ghat areas of Pune and Satara during the next 3-4 hours.
