Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit war-torn Ukraine in August. According to media reports, the visit of the prime minister is expected to happen on August 23. This is the first time Modi will travel to Ukraine after the Russian invasion that began in 2022.

The reports of Modi's plan to visit come weeks after the PM met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the G7 Summit and merely days after the former met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. During his meeting with Zelensky, the two leaders had discussed the conflict in Ukraine and Modi assured that India would continue to do everything within its means to support a peaceful solution.

In May, after Modi won a third term in office, Zelenskyy had invited him to visit the country during a telephone call to congratulate him on the re-election. Modi had then reiterated that New Delhi supported all efforts for an early and peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. Modi had also said India would continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the war-torn country.

After the conversation, Zelenskyy took to social media to say that Ukraine is interested in strengthening trade and economic relations with India, especially in agricultural exports, aviation cooperation, and pharmaceutical and industrial product trade.

Recently, there was a high-level exchange between India and Ukraine as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke to his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba over the phone. The EAM had said the talks were on "further developing our bilateral relationship."
