Kerala rain news July 29: IMD predicts heavy showers in Wayanad, Kannur districts on Monday

Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts of Kerala can expect isolated heavy rainfall tomorrow, July 28, Sunday. Based on the rainfall alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an orange alert has been declared for the three districts. Meanwhile, a yellow alert was declared for  Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Saturday.

"Heavy to very heavy rainfall (12cm-20cm) is very likely to occur at isolated places in Kerala on 28th July 2024 & heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at isolated places in Kerala on 27th, 29th & 30th July 2024," IMD's Thiruvananthapuram Met Centre said in its official website.   

In the light of heavy rains making a comeback to Kerala, several districts have been issued with yellow alerts for the next three days. They are:

  • 28–07–2024: Ernakulam, Palakkad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Wayanad
  • 29–07–2024: Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod 
  • 30–07–2024: Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod 

Strong surface winds with speeds reaching 30-40 gusting to 50 kmph are likely to prevail occasionally over Kerala on 27th & 28th July 2024, IMD said.  Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea as squally weather with wind speeds 35 kmph to 45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely to prevail along and off North Kerala coast, it added.

High waves in the range of 2.3 - 2.6 meters are forecasted till 23:30 hours on 28-07-2024 on the shores of Ernakulam. The Met Department also said that coastal Alappuzha can expect swell waves in the range of 11.0 - 12.0 sec period with 1.6 - 1.7 m height.
