The Congress took a dig at Bharatiya Janata Party and Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, and asked has the latter invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the violence-ridden state before or after his Ukraine visit.

Congress Communications Secretary Jairam Ramesh said the Manipur CM met with the prime minister twice and the people of Manipur would like to know whether Biren Singh invited Narendra Modi to Manipur.

Ramesh tweeted, “The Chief Minister of Manipur attends the NITI Aayog meeting in New Delhi presided over by the self-anointed non-biological PM. Then the Manipur CM attends a meeting of BJP CMs and Deputy CMs presided over by the same deity. The simple question that the people of Manipur are asking is this: Did Shri N. Biren Singh meet with Shri Narendra Modi separately one-on-one and discuss the situation in Manipur, which started burning on the night of May 3rd 2023? Did Shri Biren Singh invite Shri Narendra Modi to visit Manipur, either before or after His trip to Ukraine?”

Biren Singh, who reached Delhi on Thursday met with the prime minister for the first time since the ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023. Before departing to Delhi, Singh told reporters at Imphal, “My visit to Delhi is for the NITI Aayog meeting. Following this, there will be a chief ministers' conclave where we will discuss various issues. I will address the current situation in the state and seek immediate solutions to the ongoing crisis. I am optimistic that positive outcomes will result.” Singh had said there would be a one-to-one meeting between him and the prime minister.

At least 200 people lost their lives and more than 60,000 people were displaced in the violence that broke out between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. Most of those displaced are still living in relief camps.
