The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the Enforcement Directorate’s plea challenging Jharkhand High Court’s order granting bail to Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The agency had arrested the CM in a money laundering case.

Hearing the case, Justices B.R. Gavai and K.V. Viswanathan observed that the High Court’s verdict was “very well reasoned”. The High Court prima facie observed the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader was not guilty of money laundering. The bench observed that the judgment has mentioned valid reasons why section 50 statements were disregarded and there was nothing implicating Soren.

The ED arrested the Jharkhand CM on January 31 in connection with an alleged land scam and he was accused of grabbing over eight acres of land forging land documents. Soren, who resigned shortly before being arrested by the central agency, took oath as CM again on July 4.
