Congress and opposition slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre and railway minister for recurring rail accidents. The Congress said over 17 lives have been lost in rail accidents in the recent past and there is zero accountability.

“Yet another railway accident. But the PR machine of the Fail (rail) Minister continues. In June and July 2024 alone, the Fail Minister has overseen three accidents that have cumulatively cost 17 Indians their lives and left 100s injured, ”Congress Communications Secretary Jairam Ramesh said.

Listing recent rail accidents, Pawan Khera, Chairman, Congress media and publicity department tweeted, “In the usual aftermath, @AshwiniVaishnaw would visit the site with his PR team by evening and will upload a reel by tomorrow. In Modi’s new India, there is no accountability, no resignations, only grandiose talks about irrelevant rail projects that no one uses.”

The Trinamool Congress came down heavily on the Centre and said rail accidents have become a “new normal” under the Modi government. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha also questioned Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s silence on recurring rail accidents. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren directed authorities to extend all help to the injured.

Two people died and 20 others were injured after 18 coaches of the Mumbai-Howrah Mail derailed in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharsawan district on Tuesday morning. The accident occurred around 3:45 am near Badabamboo, around 80km from Jamshedpur. Rescue measures are continuing.
