Traffic closed on Srinagar-Leh highway after cloudburst in Kashmir, several houses damaged

District administration advises Amarnath Yatris to wait for updates

Kashmir authorities have shut down traffic on Srinagar-Leh highway following a cloudburst in the Cherwan Kangan area of the Ganderbal district. According to authorities, several houses in the low-lying areas in the region suffered damages after a canal in the area overflowed. However, no casualties have been reported.

According to authorities, a cloudburst occurred in Ganderbal district’s Cherwan Kangan area, causing damage to paddy fields and several vehicles got stuck in debris. Water has entered low-lying areas and several houses got damaged.

Ganderbal SDM Bilal Mukhtar told ANI, “Srinagar-Leh highway has been closed and those travelling on the route and pilgrims who are on Amarnath Yatra should await updates from the district administration before proceeding further. 

Mukhtar added, “The houses in low-lying areas have been damaged and we are assessing the situation. For now, we have shifted a few people to the houses nearby and if the situation arises we will shift them to plain areas.” Mukhtar said no lives were lost since local people stepped in and started rescue operations.
