Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has lauded Vinesh Phogat who reached the final of the Olympic Games, becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to do so, saying “the echo of your success in Paris can be heard clearly till Delhi”.

Phogat is now the first Indian woman wrestler to compete in the final of the Olympic Games with a convincing 5-0 win over Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the 50kg category in Paris on Tuesday. After Vinesh is confirmed to win a silver medal, Rahul wished her the best with the hashtag #GoForGold.

Taking an apparent dig at the former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was accused of sexual harassment of women wrestlers, the former Congress chief said the “entire system of power which made her shed tears of blood was shattered in front of the brave daughter of India.”

The MP slammed those who questioned the intentions and abilities of Vinesh and her teammates have now got their answer. “This is the identity of champions, they give their answer from the field,” he said.

Rahul's sister and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also took to her her WhatsApp channel, urging Phogat to keep fighting and keep moving forward, adding that prayers of crores of Indians are with you. “My sister, we all are eagerly waiting for the medal. Your every move on the field is thrilling us all,” she added.
