Wayanad landslide: Rescuers recover 4 bodies as search ops enter day 11; 131 still missing

Local people, affected persons join final search operation

As search operations entered day 11 in landslide-affected areas in Wayanad, rescuers recovered four dead bodies on Friday. The district administration has launched a final search, including survivors, at landslide-hit areas to identify missing bodies.

According to reports, the four bodies were recovered from the Soochipara-Kanthanpara forest region and a body part, a leg, was also recovered by rescuers. The bodies will be airlifted, authorities said.

The District Disaster Management Authority has launched a final search for missing persons including police personnel, Army, Forest, Fire and Rescue personnel, volunteers and survivors. The ministerial subcommittee overseeing the rescue operations in Wayanad said the idea was to involve all and utilise all expertise for the search operation. Revenue Minister K. Rajan said survivors were included to give an opportunity to kin to take part in the final rounds of the search.

Medical teams have also been deployed at the sites to aid survivors if they face any psycho-traumatic situations while visiting the site. 

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Wayanad on Saturday and reviewing relief measures being carried out there. The prime minister is likely to reach Wayanad on Saturday noon.

The search operations are being conducted in six zones - Punchirimattam- the origin of the landslide, Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Soochippara and Kanthanpara waterfalls, Sunrise Valley, Pothukallu and both banks of Chaliyar river till Nilambur.
