Sanjay Roy, the accused in the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College Hospital on Friday morning was sent to police custody for two weeks. The 33-year-old accused was produced before a Sealdah court on Saturday, where no lawyer came forward to represent him.
A 31-year-old second-year postgraduate student from Panihati in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital’ The sexual assault angle was established and the Kolkata Police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to nab the culprit at the earliest. Sanjay Roy was held under seven hours of the formation of the team.

1. Sanjay Roy was a Kolkata Police civic volunteer. Recruited in 2019, Roy had access to multiple departments of the Medical College.
2. This became possible as he was often posted at the police outpost in RG Kar Medical College. He reportedly used influence to get attested to the KP's Welfare Cell and made enough connections to ensure he could stay at the hospital complex.
3. The victim was found dead inside the seminar hall on the third floor of the Medial College's emergency building. CCTV cameras have caught the accused entering the emergency building at 4:00 am and leaving 40 minutes later, Times Of India said in a report.
4. Also seen in the CCTV visuals was a Bluetooth headset dangling around Sanjay's neck. The device was missing when he exited the building, the cops found out. A piece of the headset was found near the victim's body and the investigation team could confirm that it was paired to Sanjay Roy's mobile phone, the daily said.
5. The accused was taken to police custody just ahead of midnight. Among the five people who entered the building around the time of the murder, Roy was the only person without a legitimate reason to be there. Later, he confessed of having committed the crime, police told the press.
