When attacked by the accused Sanjay Roy on Friday morning, the late doctor was asleep, Kolkata Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing her murder case said. The 31-year-old second-year postgraduate student was found dead inside a seminar room on the third floor of the RG Kar Medical College Hospital building.

According to the police, the victim and a handful of her friends stayed awake to watch Neeraj Chopra in action at the Paris Olympics. His event was slated at 11:45 PM IST on August 8.

After the javelin throw event was over, the five friends ordered food and ate it inside the seminar hall. While her friends decided to leave, the victim decided to stay back to study, Times Of India quoted the police as saying. Around 3:00 in the morning, she dozed off in the hall and was still asleep when the accused found her an hour later, the report added.

The postmortem report confirmed that the lady doctor was sexually assaulted.  CCTV cameras have caught the accused entering the emergency building at 4:00 am and leaving 40 minutes late. Among all the people who were caught on camera accessing the building during the time of the murder, Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer, was the only person without a proper reason to justify his presence. A piece of a headphone paired with his mobile phone was also retrieved from the crime scene.

The accused reportedly confessed to having committed the horrendous crime and was sent to police custody for two weeks. The 33-year-old accused was produced before a Sealdah court on Saturday, where no lawyer came forward to represent him.
